Mean time between failures (MTBF) is the average time between system breakdowns. MTBF is a crucial maintenance metric to measure performance, safety, and equipment design, especially for critical or complex assets, like generators or airplanes. It is also used to determine the reliability of an asset.

Calem calculates the mean time between failure (MTBF) based on failure codes in work orders. The metric helps maintenance professionals tune PM scheduling to prevent failures.

Here is the process to report MTBF in Calem.

  • Set a failure Code at a reactive work order.
  • Use MTBF report to generate the MTBF metric

1. Set Failure Code at Work Order

A failure code can be set when a reactive work order is created. There are options to enforce failure code when a work order is created. See Section 5 of this blog for more information. The failure code will be used in calculating MTBF.

2. Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)

A report is provided in Calem to calculate MTBF based on the failure codes in work orders.

  • Menu path: Asset | Report | Mean Time Between Failure Codes (MTBFc)
  • Work orders with asset and failure code will be included in the report
  • Various grouping is provided to report the MTBF
  • You may select a period of time provided, or a custom date range to report the MTBF

The MTBF report shows the metric by days and hours along with failure counts.
