Custom Reports

I'm trying to make custom reports from CalemEAM's database using Jasper Reports.  I just found out that dropdown values/labels are stored in CalemMsg.properties file.  May I ask what's the best way to fetch these values for the custom reports.  I was thinking of creating a custom lookup table...
