Auto-Assign Asset ID Numbers

Is there any way to have the (asset_no) auto-increment? I would like to have the system pseudo-randomly assign the asset number instead of the user having to choose one that is not already used. If this could be set to a specific number of characters that would be even better. I would like to eventually run a query against the database and make bar code labels based on the (asset_no).

Currently asset number is not auto-numbered. We like the suggestion and added a request to add it.
