Asset Category and Sub-Category
Asset category and sub-category are used to organize assets and configuration items in Calem. Inside a sub-category, you may organize assets into asset groups. For example, you have defined an asset group "F150-Trucks" which represents all your model F-150 trucks. You can define a category "Vehicle" and sub-category "Vehicle.Truck" which represents all trucks in your system.
Other samples of sub-categories for category "Hardware" include:
- Hardware.Server
- Hardware.PC
- Hardware.Printer
Asset sub-category and category can be used to define assets or configuration items with varied attributes and numbering:
- Category attributes can be defined at sub-category and category levels.
- When you assign a sub-category and a category to an asset or a configuration item, all the attributes at category and sub-category levels are available.
- Sub-category has "Asset pattern" that can be defined to auto-number assets for this sub-category.
- Custom screens can be defined based on sub-categories.
- Custom screens can be launched to create assets or view assets from "Sub-Categories" list form of asset module.
Category attributes are sets of fields. They can be associated with asset categories and sub-categories. Category attributes allow Calem to support assets or configuration items of varied attributes. For instance, a computer server has attributes of operating system, CPU and memory; a tire has tread depth and other technical attributes. They can all be defined and managed in Calem:
- First of all, define asset categories and sub-categories for assets or configuration items. For instance, "Vehicle" and "Vehicle.Truck" are identified to manage trucks.
- Next, identify attributes at category and sub-category levels. For instance, each vehicle has license and state, these attributes will be defined at category level. Truck has number of axles which should be defined at its sub-category level.
- Next, create category attributes for "Vehicle" and "Vehicle.Truck" and assign them to asset categories and sub-categories respectively.
- Finally, define custom screens based on sub-categories.
See Admin Guide for more information about category attributes and screen customization.
